Santorini: Sunset Cruise

SANTORINISUNSET CRUISE

The Greek island of Santorini conjures up a variety of images when you hear the name.

Stark white buildings atop jagged cliffs, contrasting blue domes that are signature to the town of Oia and the quintessential donkey.

Santorini is such a unique island and visiting is like uncovering a rare gem, only to find out that everyone and their grandmother already knows about it.

I arrived in Santorini at the beginning of July with my fiancé to meet up with my childhood friend and her family. Amanda was my first friend; we met just before kindergarten and to think we were now in Greece with her husband and baby boy on the cusp of her 30th birthday was truly remarkable.

One thing on Amanda’s Must-See list was a sunset. We were lucky and had a decent view from the roof of our rental apartment, but it wasn’t the magical Santorini sunset that a girl deserves during her 30th birthday week. The throngs of tourists that gather in Oia every night to watch the sun descend from the sky is not the peaceful and reflective experience we wanted to give her.

With that in mind, the gentlemen set off to find the perfect place to watch the sunset… a yacht! (If you know our men, this would come as no surprise).

There is no shortage of sunset cruises in Santorini, or any type of sailing cruises for that matter. Whatever your preference is: relaxing cruise, booze cruise, afternoon, or evening, you can find the cruise that suits your needs in Santorini.

After much deliberation we decided to splurge for a private sunset tour (5 hours) with Santorini Exclusive Sailing which was booked through Drossos Car and Moto Rental in Oia.  There were a variety of reasons we chose this option, but the main one was that we had a baby to accommodate – probably not the best accessory for a crowded booze cruise.

Cuteness overload!

Now, I won’t go on and on about the boat because I don’t know anything about boats, but the men were very impressed with our Odysseas Sailing Yacht.

The 5 hour voyage included a variety of stops/ sightseeing visits around Santorini, for example, Red Beach, Black, Beach and New Burnt Island, amongst others. For dinner we were treated to some delicious food that was made fresh by the two-man crew, and ended the tour by watching the sunset and “Cheersing” to one of my favourite humans on her 30th birthday.

There is no doubt in my mind that splurging on a sunset cruise in Santorini is worth every penny, especially when you’re with friends like these.
